[TV] Indy - stop auto power off of Cisco 4742HDC? Think they can hack the Motorola box to change to a 16:9 display mode? I know writing an.
The Scientific Atlanta 8300HD is a DVR that you is normally rented by cable providers. The software that runs on it is determined by the cable provider and may even be different depending on your location. I happen to have (rent) a close relative to this cable box and I did some research a while ago. There is a lot of information on so that would be a better place to ask for this. You can record a TV program through the Firewire output on the back while that program is being broadcast. Cable providers have to provide this feature, but they only have to do it for programs that are available on the cable for no extra charge; the feature may be disabled for premium channels that you pay extra for, it's almost certainly disabled for playback from the hard disk and it's definitely disabled for pay-per-view shows (on many cable networks you can't even record those to the hard disk).
You will need special drivers to do it, you'll have to google for more details. This is the way that most people record hi-def shows off a cable box.
Taking the internal hard disk out is not allowed, you might end up paying a stiff fine if they find out that you opened the box when you return it (and you inevitably will return it, either because it fails, or because you get some sort of upgrade, or because you move to a different location. Remember it's a rental). It wouldn't help you anyway because SA uses encryption to store the TV shows.
By the way, replacing the hard disk is also not an option because the firmware checks the hard disk serial number and it won't work if it doesn't match. The SA8300 has an eSATA connector to which you can connect an external hard disk. AFAIK, most (if not all) cable providers allow you to do this and it works quite well.
It's a win-win situation: customers can easily expand their recording capacity, and cable providers don't have to provide set-top boxes with bigger capacity - they can just tell customers to buy an eSATA hard disk. And because the firmware uses encryption on the external disk too, there is currently no way to access the programs recorded on it (as far as I know, the system hasn't been hacked, it never will be, because as soon as someone hacks it, SA will change the system and cable providers can deploy it to all set-top-boxes in a matter of hours). Bottom line: the only way to record shows off the hard disk on this DVR is to use the analog VCR outputs. They will only give you standard definition video and stereo audio at best. There may be devices that record from the HDMI output but chances are that all output from the DVR is HDCP protected and no legally available device will support recording from that. NEVER insert or remove hard disks while the power is on. NAS200 doesn't support hot swapping. ALWAYS use the power button to turn the NAS200 off, don't just unplug it. Don't trust RAID.
Make BACKUPS! To ACCESS the disks directly, you will need ext2 and/or XFS file systems. I recommend using. Disks will get HOT with standard fan, use 'green' disks or consider. FTP server is insecure. Use my firmware and SCP instead. Supports SSH shell prompt and SCP for secure file access, and allows running other software.

I have a Comcast (Cisco Model RNG200) DVR and would also like to copy shows off it to the best possible of the following destinations: 1. VCR (then to later copy to DVD). DVD harddrive/burner.
Computer harddrive (laptop with Win7 Pro OS). There is a USB input on the front of the dvr, vcr inputs on back, and possibly other inputs (not too familiar with those). I spoke to someone at Cisco on the phone and he suggested there was a support manual to be downloaded somewhere here on the Cisco.com website. Plus he said I could download some kind of software that would allow my laptop to 'communicate' with the HD in the unit and basically copy/paste the files over to the laptop. Also not sure why the one guy suggests you would be fined for opening the unit. If you don't damage anything or literally break open the unit, who would know and why would anyone care?
